TRANSPORTATION AND WATERFRONT

The Transportation and Waterfront (T&W) Department is within NYCEDC’s Planning Division, and together with the Land Use and Neighborhood Strategies Departments, works to promote inclusive, sustainable growth in the City’s neighborhoods and waterfronts.  The Planning Division advances major projects that engage communities in planning for their future; help build vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods; advance strategic infrastructure investments; leverage the City’s public assets; strengthen multimodal transportation systems; and promote public access, economic opportunity, and climate resilience.

The T&W Department delivers innovative infrastructure plans, policies, and partnerships that leverage City assets to enable sustainable, integrated transportation systems and waterfront developments for business vitality, neighborhood growth, and renewable energy in New York City.  We partner with the private sector, utilities, State and Federal agencies and regulators, and City agencies to plan and implement infrastructure that are essential for New York City and State to achieve ambitious clean energy, emission-reduction, and wetland restoration goals while advancing equitable economic development. 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Senior Project Manager (SPM) will support and work with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement planning and policy projects that enhance New York City’s transportation and renewable energy systems and expand the City’s wetland mitigation bank to support ecological restoration and waterfront development.  This position will be responsible for working directly with a T&W Vice President and Assistant Vice Presidents to spearhead inter-departmental and inter-agency coordination. 

The SPM will perform research and analysis (qualitative and quantitative) to support NYCEDC initiatives for decarbonizing the transportation and energy sectors, as well as citywide initiatives to accelerate modal shift from trucks to marine highway and rail, truck electrification, and greenway expansion in underserved communities. Current projects include: the scaling up of EV-charging infrastructure and development of EV-charging depots at City-owned sites; the upgrading of NYCEDC-managed heliports to support the adoption of quieter and cleaner electric-powered aircraft; the development and integration of a marine highway network with micro-distribution hubs for last-mile deliveries, in partnership with logistics companies and the NYC Department of Transportation; facilitating transit access to employment centers in partnership with the MTA (e.g. IBX and North Shore BRT); developing offshore wind (OSW) port facilities and renewable energy interconnection infrastructure; and improving micromobility access and connectivity in greenway and streetscape projects. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively alongside multi-disciplinary teams facilitating community waterfront and transportation planning and policy efforts aimed at improving waterfront and waterway infrastructure investments, reducing truck and auto dependency, improving last-mile freight mobility, supporting quieter and cleaner helicopter alternatives including electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, and enhancing the City’s passenger transit network
  • Engage in project management and project support duties including report and memo preparation, data analysis, research, meeting preparation, and off-site fieldwork, as well as team coordination across NYCEDC, consultants, and other stakeholders
  • Establish and oversee interagency and interdepartmental working groups on select projects, meeting frequently to move projects forward and address challenges
  • Build and maintain relationships with governmental and quasi-governmental entities; regulators; industry organizations; civic and community organizations; cultural and professional organizations; and advocacy groups
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, transportation, supply chain logistics, environmental science, or a related field
  • 3+ years of full-time experience contributing to projects related to sustainable freight transportation, renewable energy, greenways, micromobility, and/or wetland mitigation banking. Relevant internships may substitute for professional experience
  • Demonstrated ability to self-manage as well as superior project management skills, including the ability to complete tasks in a timely fashion with minimal supervision in a results-oriented environment
  • Effective interpersonal, written, verbal and analytical skills
  • Proactive “self-starter” and “team player”; able to work in collaborative, cross-functional teams
  • General understanding of transportation systems and policies, and experience with the technical aspects of the planning and development process, preferably specific to NYC
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including Excel and Powerpoint; Adobe Creative Suite and GIS a plus
  • Ability to travel across the five boroughs of NYC, as needed   
  • Ability to attend evening and occasional weekend meetings, as needed 
  • New York City residence is required within 180 days of hire
Salary Range
$80,000$82,000 USD
