Maria R. Sahuquillo currently serves as the EU Bureau Chief at Diario EL PAÍS, a position held since January 2007. In this role, Maria covers topics related to the EU and NATO, with a focus on foreign policy, defense, energy, and migration, while also overseeing the Brussels delegation and monitoring the Russia-Ukraine war. Previously, Maria was the Moscow Chief Correspondent, reporting on Russia and its neighbors, and served as an International Editor with extensive coverage of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the Balkans. Other roles include a focus on health policy and gender equality while working in the society section. Early professional experience included communication consultancy, reporting in European-focused media, and journalism training in Romania. Maria holds a Master's degree in Journalism from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, complemented by studies at the University of Bucharest.
