Starting in 1993, Smith worked as an Audit Senior at Taggart Mitchell & Associates PC for three years. Following this, they moved on to UCP of Southwestern Pennsylvania in 1996, where they served as CFO/Controller and successfully resolved accounting irregularities left by the previous CFO.
In 1997, Smith took on the role of Controller at Smith Machine, a chapter 11 steel processor, where they orchestrated a turnaround by restructuring debt, improving cash flow, and reducing operating costs.
