Shane K. Butler is a Principal Geologist at the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) since August 2016, where responsibilities include collaboration with leadership and a multidisciplinary team to enhance analytical techniques for unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. Prior to this role, Shane served as a Senior Scientist and Manager of the Natural Materials Analytical Research Laboratory, as well as an Analytical Geologist at EERC, focusing on chemical and mineralogical analyses. Previous experience includes positions at the Illinois State Geological Survey as a Geologic Specialist and Supportive Geologist, where oversight of laboratory operations and research on limestone fines for coal scrubbers took place. Shane began the professional journey as an Hourly Assistant at the Illinois State Geological Survey and has held roles such as a Teaching Assistant and an archaeology field assistant. Educational qualifications include a Master’s degree in Geology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and two undergraduate degrees from Minnesota State Moorhead in Geosciences and Anthropology.
