Job Summary

The Controller is responsible for guiding financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures. Monitoring and confirming the financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to internal and external auditors.

In this role, the Controller ensures a strong commitment to quality, adhere to departmental metrics, and help develop efficient and accurate practices concerning all accounting transactions. The Controller will maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state polices and directives, and current accounting standards.

The Controller must be able to supervise the work of others and works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead staff employees through coaching, development, and collaboration practices using accountability metrics to align and deliver on company goals and key performance indicators (KPI)
  • Oversee Accounting processes by developing and complying with policies/processes/standard operating procedures (SOPs) for overall efficiency and effectiveness as relates to quality, productivity, and profitability of the accounting department to ensure deadlines are met and internal controls, such as financial reporting, accounting, billing, collections, budgeting administration, cash and credit management, etc. are completed with excellence
  • Monitor state sales tax, the filing of applicable tax returns, maintain state sales tax rates, and customer invoicing including financial activities and details, such as cash flow and reserve levels, to ensure that all legal and regulatory requirements are met
  • Delegate authority for the receipt, disbursement, banking, protection, and custody of funds, securities, and financial instruments
  • Receive, record, and authorize request for disbursements in accordance with company policies and procedures
  • Preparation of financial statements, business activity reports, financial position forecasts, annual budgets, or reports required by regulatory agencies including coding expenses utilizing departmental budgets and conducting or coordinating audits of company accounts and financial transactions to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements and statutes
  • Analyze the financial details of past, present, and expected operations to identify development opportunities and areas where improvement is needed to include creating an Accounts Payable Aging process, a monthly close out review, and a process for contractor setup for obtaining W-9’s, preparing annual 1099s, and preparing financial information so that outside accountants can complete tax returns
  • Review accounts for discrepancies, month-end closing activities, and reconciliations
  • Provide direction and assistance to other departments regarding accounting and budgeting policies and procedures and efficient control and utilization of financial resources
  • Determine depreciation rates to apply to capitalized items and advise management on actions regarding the purchase, lease, or disposal of such items

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of accounting, finance, or other directly related fields of study (four years of experience in accounting, finance, or other directly related field may substitute for the required education)

  • One (1) year of experience customarily and regularly supervising and directing the work of two or more full-time employees (or equivalent) or two (2) years of employment at EWN

  • Five (5) years of experience in Accounts Receivable and Payables

  • Five (5) years of general computer usage with the web browsing and using Microsoft Word, Excel (Pivot Tables and V Lookups), and PowerPoint

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of:

  • Budget control methods, policies, and procedures; and laws and regulations pertaining to fiscal operations.

  • Financial administration, budget control, and fiscal accounting.

  • Business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation,leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources.

  • Established purchasing methods and procedures.

  • Accounting discrepancy identification and resolution methods

  • Advanced understanding of accounting software

Skilled in:

  • Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions conclusions, or approaches to problems.

Preferred Qualifications and KSAs

  • Seven (7) year of accounting experience

  • Two (2) plus years of experience customarily and regularly supervising and directing the work of two or more full-time employees (or equivalent)

  • Salesforce, Financial Force, or other associated software program experience

  • Oil, gas, or energy industry or SaaS business model experience
