Coastal Engineer at Environmental Science Associates

Yi Liu has a diverse range of work experience. They began their career as a Summer Student at National Taiwan University in 2012. They then worked as a Summer Intern at AECOM in 2016. In 2013, they joined Virginia Tech as a Graduate Research Assistant and later became a Graduate Teaching Assistant. From 2018 to 2019, Yi Liu served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where they led the update effort for the Coastal Processes Manual. They also collaborated with policy makers and researchers on coastal resilience issues. In 2019, they worked as a Coastal Engineer at Environmental Science Associates, conducting coastal hazards evaluation and wetland restoration analysis. They also performed coastal hydrodynamic modeling. From 2020 to 2021, Yi Liu worked as a Flood Data Scientist at One Concern, where they developed and calibrated a nationwide flood forecast pipeline in Japan. They also mentored junior data scientists and specialized in ensemble modeling and remote sensing. In 2021, they became a Senior Data Scientist at One Concern, before transitioning to the role of Staff Data Scientist and Product Owner in 2022. Their responsibilities included connecting engineering, data science, and product departments on innovation projects related to extreme heat and climate change. Currently, Yi Liu is working as a Coastal Engineer at Environmental Science Associates, starting in 2023.

Yi Liu completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, starting in 2009 and finishing in 2013. Following that, from 2013 to 2018, Yi pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech. In addition to their academic qualifications, Yi also obtained various certifications, such as the Deep Learning Specialization, Sequence Models, Convolutional Neural Networks, Improving Deep Neural Networks: Hyperparameter Tuning, Regularization and Optimization, Neural Networks and Deep Learning, Structuring Machine Learning Projects, Advanced Learning Algorithms, Machine Learning Specialization, Unsupervised Learning, Recommenders, Reinforcement Learning, and Supervised Machine Learning: Regression and Classification, all from Coursera. Yi also holds an Engineering in Training (EIT) certification from NCEES and a Preparing Future Professoriate Certificate from Virginia Tech.
