Heike Schmitz has a diverse work experience spanning multiple industries and roles. Heike is currently employed at ePlant, Inc as a Staff Software Engineer. Heike began their career in 1990 as an Analyst/Programmer at Winter Partners and later worked as a QA Engineer at Workspot Inc. In 2001, they joined Google as a Senior Engineering Manager, where they developed and led the company's testing services teams. Heike also served as an Advisor/Consultant at Google in 2006. From 2015 to 2021, Heike worked at Jupiter Research Foundation, first as a Senior Research Scientist/Software Engineer and later as a Research Associate/Project Manager/Software Engineer. During this time, they were responsible for the development of an autonomous oceanic microscope system and provided scientific and technical expertise to various projects. In 2014, Heike became a Member of Sand Hill Angels, an angel investment group, and in 2017, they served as a Board Member at Ocean Champions, a political organization focused on ocean conservation. Heike was also a Board Member at Friends of the River from 2019 to 2022.

Heike Schmitz pursued their education starting from 1982 to 1987 at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, where they studied Computer Science. Following this, from 2010 to 2012, they attended Foothill College with a focus on Transfer studies. Later, from 2012 to 2014, they enrolled at the University of California, Santa Cruz and obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Marine Biology. In August 2016, Heike Schmitz also obtained a certification in Machine Learning Foundations: A Case Study Approach from Coursera Course Certificates.
