Giorgio Casaburi, Ph.D. has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of bioinformatics. Giorgio currently serves as the Senior Director of Bioinformatics & Data Analytics at Exagen Inc. since March 2022. Prior to that, from January 2021 to March 2022, they worked as the Director of Bioinformatics at Metabiomics, where they led and managed a team of bioinformatics scientists and devOps engineers.

From 2017 to 2021, Dr. Casaburi worked at Evolve BioSystems, Inc. in various roles. Giorgio started as a Bioinformatics Scientist in March 2017 and eventually became a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist, leading bioinformatics analysis teams, collaborating with other departments, and engaging in customer-facing activities. Giorgio was also promoted to the position of Principal Scientist, where they managed multiple projects, collaborated with company executives on business modeling and strategic planning, generated intellectual property through data analysis, and presented results at meetings and conferences.

Before joining Evolve BioSystems, Inc., Dr. Casaburi worked as a Bioinformatics Scientist at NASA, focusing on astrobiology and space biology. Giorgio examined microbial communities and their interactions with the environment, particularly studying the effects of zero gravity on animal-bacterial symbioses during real space flights.

Prior to their work at NASA, they were a Bioinformatics Research Scientist at Northern Arizona University, where they studied the human gut microbiome in Celiac and Crohn's disease using bioinformatics methods applied to metagenomics. Giorgio also contributed to the development of QIIME, a widely-used tool in metagenomics studies.

Motivated by their passion for the subject, they went on to pursue a Master's Degree in Medical Biotechnology at the same institution, completing it in 2009.

Their dedication to learning and research led him to further their knowledge in bioinformatics and computational biology. In 2011, Casaburi enrolled at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II once again and successfully earned their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in 2014.

Casaburi's educational journey did not stop there. In 2014, they ventured abroad and became a Post Doctoral Fellow at the prestigious University of Florida. During this period, which lasted until 2017, they specialized in the field of host-microbe interactions.
