Director, Computational Drug Design at Exscientia

Alba Macias has extensive work experience in the field of computational drug design and scientific research. Since 2022, they have been working as the Director of Computational Drug Design at Exscientia. Prior to their current position, they worked at Vernalis for over 15 years, starting as a Senior Scientist in 2006 and later advancing to the role of Principal Scientist. During their time at Vernalis, they conducted computational work resulting in patents and papers in various areas, including oncology, anti-infectives, and CNS. Alba also collaborated with pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions as a scientist and project manager, and was involved in the development of undisclosed clinical candidates. Additionally, they acted as a liaison for an academic collaboration with Monash University in Australia for the past 8 years, focusing on fragment-based drug design. Before joining Vernalis, Alba Macias worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where they conducted research in computed-aided drug design and software development. Alba also completed their Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Miami, where they focused on quantum and molecular mechanical studies and theoretical investigations of iron porphines hemes.

Alba Macias has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Chemistry from the University of Miami. Alba also holds a PhD in Chemistry from the same university. Additionally, they have a Certificate of Higher Education in Genetics from the University of Cambridge. Alba Macias has also been a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Maryland Baltimore.
