Matthew Harwood has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and industries. Matthew currently serves as the Vice President of Communications at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression since September 2022. Prior to this, they were the Managing Director of Communications at the Brennan Center for Justice from July 2019 to September 2022.

Matthew has also worked at the ACLU, where they held multiple roles. Matthew served as the Managing Editor from June 2017 to July 2019, focusing on audience growth and attracting new contributors. Matthew achieved significant success, with approximately 14 million page views to the editorial content in 2018. Before that, Matthew held the position of Senior Writer/Editor from February 2014 to June 2017, where they oversaw the editorial content, copy editing, and writing op-eds for external media outlets. Additionally, they were a Media Strategist from December 2012 to February 2014, handling rapid reaction communications and strategically pitching experts to media outlets.

Matthew also has experience as a freelance writer for various publications, including Alternet, The Guardian, and Salon, where their articles and op-eds gained significant traction. Matthew contributed to the book chapter "Enjoining an American Nightmare" in 2010, published by Air Force University Press.

Earlier in their career, Matthew worked at ASIS International as an Associate Editor from 2007 to 2012. Here, they researched and wrote features for the print magazine, produced video features for the digital edition, and contributed to online blog posts and stories.

Throughout their career, Matthew has received recognition for their work, winning awards from the ASBPE for their magazine pieces and homeland security column. Matthew has also successfully increased the visibility and reach of the organizations they have worked with.

Matthew Harwood attended Saint Joseph's University from 1998 to 2002, where they earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Government. Following this, they pursued further education at the University of Saint Andrews from 2005 to 2006, completing a Master of Letters in International Security Studies, specializing in the same field.
