Vice President, Marketing And Communications at First Book

Lisa Herling has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of marketing and communications. Lisa has held various leadership roles in both nonprofit organizations and corporate companies.

Starting in 1988, Lisa worked as the Marketing & PR Manager at the American Museum of Natural History, Hayden Planetarium. Lisa then served as the Director of Public Relations at the Children's Aid Society in 1989.

In 1990, Lisa joined McGrath Power Public Relations as an Account Supervisor, specifically working with The Body Shop. Lisa later moved to The Body Shop, Inc. in 1991, where they held the positions of Communications Manager and Social Inventions Manager. During their time at The Body Shop, Lisa played a significant role in positioning the CEO/founder as an innovative and socially responsible business leader.

In 1994, Lisa joined Barnes & Noble as the Vice President of Corporate Communications. Here, they built and led the corporate communications function, focusing on brand positioning, media relations, and community relations.

In 1998, they moved to HarperCollins Publishers as the Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications. At HarperCollins, Lisa was recruited by the CEO to establish and lead worldwide corporate communications during a turnaround/growth phase.

From 2008 to 2011, Lisa worked at Cengage Learning as the Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications. Lisa advised the CEO on communications, positioning, and crisis management, and developed a thought leadership program and media relations strategy to raise the company's profile.

In 2011, Lisa joined Westmeath Global Communications as an Advisor, providing strategic counsel, planning, and execution for clients including Aflac, QVC, SAP, HP, and Arrow Electronics.

From 2007 to 2019, Lisa ran their own communications and public relations consulting firm, Herling Communications LLC, serving clients such as Thomson Reuters and DStreet PR.

Most recently, Lisa worked at First Book as the Vice President of Marketing and Communications. In this role, they designed and led the implementation of strategic marketing and communication efforts to support the organization's mission of ensuring education equity for children in low-income communities. Lisa conducted a messaging and brand refresh process to engage stakeholders and position First Book as a leader in education equity.
