Scientist/senior Scientist, Biochemistry

Full-time · Cambridge, United States

Job description

Flare Therapeutics is a biotechnology company pioneering a new therapeutic space with a novel approach to decipher the biology of transcription factors to develop small molecule medicines. Based on insights from the seminal work of its scientific founders, Flare’s team has uncovered ‘switch sites,’ druggable regions that are key targets for transcription factor regulation, to address mutations that cause disease. Flare’s drug discovery efforts to target switch sites has rapidly advanced, resulting in an emerging pipeline of research programs that address well-validated genetically-defined transcription factors, initially focused on precision oncology with future potential in neurology, rare genetic disorders, immunology and inflammation. The ideal candidate will have experience exploring fundamental mechanisms of small molecule modulation of protein function using cutting-edge biochemical and biophysical techniques. The candidate’s primary role will be to develop and execute novel assays based on the company’s proprietary switch site framework to both support on-going medicinal chemistry efforts as well as to identify and characterize novel small molecules targeting transcription factors.

We are a collective of brilliant fires, trailblazing a path to conquer transcription factors and create cutting-edge medicines for patients. We embrace diversity in all its forms, experiences, and viewpoints. We are inspired by the unknown and willing to take risks. We are passionate about the science we pursue and compassionate about the patients it stands to benefit. And we respect, value, and believe in each other.

In this role you will…

  • Act as Biochemistry group representative, collaborating closely with Chemistry, Structural Biology, Proteomics, and Biology colleagues to define strategy towards the mechanistic understanding of small molecule modulators of transcription factors to improve compound efficacy for H2L and LO advancement
  • Independently design and execute mechanistically driven small molecule hit-finding efforts to target transcription factors through both internal experimental efforts and management of external CRO relationships
  • Identify and evaluate novel biochemical and biophysical techniques to fundamentally characterize transcription factor targets and their biologically relevant binding partners and determine which technologies are key drivers for discovery and lead optimization activities
  • Work with Protein Biochemistry and Structural Biology colleagues to design, generate, and characterize protein reagents needed for pre-clinical drug discovery
  • Regularly present to the scientific and management teams to inform data-driven decisions on future strategy

About you…

  • You have a BS or MS with significant industry experience or a PhD w/ 2+ years industry experience in biochemistry, biophysics, or related field.
  • You have experience supporting and guiding small molecule drug discovery programs using protein biochemistry, biophysics, or enzymology.
  • You are highly skilled in a variety of biochemical and biophysical assay techniques, such as TR-FRET, DSF, SPR, MST, ITC and/or FP.
  • You may have experience managing external FTEs or junior scientists or working in highly matrixed and cross-functional organizations.
  • You are familiar with a variety of data analysis tools to analyze bioassay data (e.g. GraphPad Prism) and may have experience using or supporting data warehousing and visualization platforms (e.g. Revvity Signals/Data Factory, Spotfire, Genedata, etc.)
  • You are a team player who listens effectively, invites feedback, challenges assumptions, and participates in active discussion.
  • You have enthusiasm for collaborating and communicating with various departments across the organization and with external CROS.
