Tariq Sethi

Tariq Sethi has extensive experience in the field of respiratory medicine and biotechnology. Tariq began their career as a Senior Lecturer and Wellcome Trust Senior Research Leave Fellow at The University of Edinburgh in 1998, where they focused on respiratory and lung cancer biology. In 2001, they became a Professor of Respiratory and Lung Cancer Biology at the same institution. In 2010, they co-founded Galecto Biotech, a biotech company specializing in the development of galectin modulators for the treatment of severe diseases. Tariq served as a Co-Founder, Board Member, and Research and Development Lead at Galecto Biotech, playing a key role in raising funds and achieving successful clinical trial results. In 2015, Sethi joined King's College London as a Professor of Respiratory Medicine and later became an Emeritus Professor in the same field. Additionally, they held leadership positions at AstraZeneca, serving as the Chief Physician Scientist and Vice President in the Respiratory, Immunology, and Autoimmunity Translational Medicine Unit. Throughout their career, Sethi has been involved in various academic and research roles, including Head of Division at Asthma, Allergy and Lung Biology and Clinical Academic Group Co-Lead at Respiratory, Anaesthetics, Critical Care, Pain.

Tariq began their education in 1975 at Imperial College London, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Biochemistry in 1978. Tariq then pursued their medical education at Selwyn College, Cambridge University, completing their Medical Tripos degree in Medicine from 1978 to 1980.

In 1980, Sethi attended Guy's Hospital London, where they obtained a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from 1980 to 1983. Tariq furthered their medical studies by achieving membership in several prestigious medical colleges. In 1989, they obtained an MRCP (UK) degree from the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and also earned the MRCPI degree from the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in the same year. Sethi continued to excel in their medical career by acquiring two more fellowships; FRCP (UK) from the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 2004, and FRCP (Ed) from the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh in 2001.

Additionally, Sethi pursued a Ph.D. in Cell/Cellular and Molecular Biology from 1990 to 1993 at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund/University College London. Tariq also holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Medicine from Selwyn College, Cambridge University, which they obtained in 1984.
