Mike Boots

Director, DC Office at Gates Ventures

Mike Boots has a diverse and extensive work experience. Mike is currently serving as the Executive Vice President at Breakthrough Energy since February 2021. Prior to that, they worked as the Director of the DC Office at Gates Ventures starting from September 2016. From April 2015 to July 2016, they were appointed as a Senior Fellow at The Aspen Institute.

Before joining Gates Ventures and The Aspen Institute, Mike held multiple roles at The White House. From February 2014 to March 2015, they served as the Acting Chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality. Mike was the Chief of Staff of the Council on Environmental Quality from February 2011 to February 2014. And from March 2009 to February 2011, they worked as the Associate Director for Land and Water in the Council on Environmental Quality.

In addition to their roles at The White House, Mike also worked as the Vice President for Sustainable Markets at SeaWeb from March 2004 to February 2009. Prior to that, they worked as the Federal Representative for Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources at the Office of the Governor - California from August 2002 to January 2004.

Before their tenure in government and non-profit organizations, Mike held various positions at McGuire and Company as a Regional Manager from April 2001 to August 2002. Mike also served as a Policy Advisor to the Regional Administrator at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from January 1999 to April 2001.

Mike Boots earned their Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from UCLA between the years 1988 and 1992. Mike further pursued their education at Syracuse University's Maxwell School, where they obtained their Master's degree in Public Administration (MPA) with a focus on Environmental Policy from 1993 to 1994.
