Sofie Thorsen

Industrial PhD at Gehl Architects

As Industrial PhD, Sofie works to bridge architectural practices with research in data science and urban informatics. With a background in sociology and years of experience within futures studies, data science and techno-anthropology, Sofie uses her data imagination and curiosity about people to question and rethink Gehl’s ways of studying public space and public life in cities. Sitting in both Gehl’s Innovation Team and the Techno-Anthropology Lab at AAU, her PhD project experiments with using large-scale visual data from the city (i.e. images on social media) to explore people’s behaviors, movements and experiences in the city, empowering architects to design cities that work even better for humans.
