Nick Adams joined GLAAD's staff in 1998 and has significantly contributed to the organization’s ongoing commitment to transgender equality. In 1998 he created the transgender section of GLAAD's Media Reference Guide, which included best practices for reporting on the transgender community – standards that the Associated Press, The New York Times, and other media outlets subsequently used to improve their own style guides. In 2015, while researching and reporting on the interview with Caitlyn Jenner, ABC looked to GLAAD as a valuable source of information on the issues affecting the transgender community, frequently tapping Adams' resources and expertise. ABC News also used GLAAD's Media Reference Guide, along with quotes from Adams, in materials created for ABCNews.com to accompany Diane Sawyer's interview.
In 2020, Netflix released Disclosure, a documentary about the way Hollywood has portrayed transgender people in film and television. Adams worked for over four years with director Sam Feder on the research for the film, appears in the documentary providing analysis and commentary, and is a consulting producer on the film.
In 2021, Adams worked with Oprah Winfrey and the team at Harpo to prepare for her interview with Elliot Page for Apple TV+. Following the interview's premiere, Ms. Winfrey sat down with Adams to talk about their work together, the importance of authentic trans media representation, and how cisgender people can be allies in the fight for trans equality.
Adams is a resource for Hollywood creatives writing stories about transgender people. He has worked with hundreds of films and television shows to help them create more realistic, multi-dimensional transgender characters, including: Degrassi which won a Peabody Award for its inclusion of a transgender teen; Glee, which worked with GLAAD to recruit a 200-person transgender choir; and Star Trek: Discovery as it added the first trans and non-binary characters in the history of the franchise. Adams worked with Electronic Arts as it created the trans-inclusive update to the The Sims, and worked closely with Xbox Game Studios and DONTNOD to create Tell Me Why, the first game from a major studio to have a playable transgender character. He has conducted presentations on how to fairly and accurately portray transgender people to high-level executives at NBC, CBS, Amazon Studios, Netflix, Showtime, FOX, Viacom, E!, Bravo, Oxygen, MSNBC, The New York Times and many more. He also works with the Casting Society of America to ensure transgender roles are cast more authentically.
Nick transitioned in 1997, and in 1999 he co-founded FTM Alliance of Los Angeles, a community-based organization dedicated to empowering transgender men. Since 2009 he has served on the board of Transforming Family, an organization for families with transgender and gender expansive children. He co-facilitates Transforming Family's peer support group for transgender teenagers. Nick met his husband John at the GLAAD Media Awards in 2001 and they live in Los Angeles.
