Marty Finestone has a diverse and extensive work experience. In 2007, they began as an Associate at Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP, where they provided legal guidance related to licensing, distribution, sales, IT contracting, and outsourcing. In 2015, they were seconded to the legal department of BASF Canada Inc. as Legal Counsel. In 2020, they founded Legal Adjacency, where they combined 15+ years of legal practice with a background in technology, operations, and legal design. In 2022, they founded Counsel Collective, a company dedicated to improving the mental health and wellbeing of lawyers through human connection and mindful productivity. Also in 2022, they began as Lawyer in Residence for Goodlawyer, representing the company in the Waterloo Region startup community. Prior to this, in 2004, they were an Articling Student at the CRTC, Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.
Marty Finestone has a diverse education history. Marty obtained their LL.M in Masters' of Law and Technology from the University of Ottawa between 2005 and 2006. Marty then obtained their LL.B in Law from the same institution between 2001 and 2004. Prior to that, they obtained their B.A. in Media, Information and Technoculture from Western University between 1998 and 2001. In addition, Marty has obtained several certifications, including a Legal Design Expert Practitioner from Legal Creatives in May 2021, an Enterprise Design Thinking Practitioner from IBM in March 2021, a Legal Design UX Research from Legal Creatives in March 2021, and a Visual Contracts by Design from Legal Creatives in March 2021.
