Derek Clay has a diverse background of research experience. In 2012, they earned their PhD from Princeton University, where they developed a novel gene knockout strategy and introduced a synthetic chromosome transformation approach. Prior to that, they were an undergraduate researcher at Cornell University and at both Case Western Reserve University and The Ohio State University. From 2019 to 2022, they were a Postdoctoral Appointee at Sandia National Laboratories and is currently a Scientist at GRO Biosciences.

Derek Clay received their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Biology/Biological Sciences, General from Cornell University in 2011. Derek then pursued a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Molecular Biology at Princeton University, which they completed in 2013. Derek continued their education at Princeton University and earned their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Molecular Biology in 2018.
