Learning Scientist at Gulf of Maine Research Institute

Dr. Amanda Dickes is a Learning Scientist at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute. She received her Ph.D. in the Learning Sciences from Vanderbilt University where she was a member of Mind, Matter and Media Lab. Prior to joining GMRI, Dr. Dickes completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the EcoLearn research group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Broadly, her research emphasizes expanding learner and practitioner agency in the production of STEM knowledge and investigates the processes through which learners and practitioners meaningfully adapt, develop and appropriate disciplinary and transdisciplinary STEM practices.

Her recent work seeks to understand how new literacies such as computational modeling and programming, when grounded in the lifeworlds of teachers and students, can become a language of practice in the science and math classroom.
