Natasa Milic-Frayling

Natasa Milic-Frayling has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. Natasa is currently the Founder & CEO of Intact Digital Ltd, a company that provides managed services for hosting and using legacy software to ensure long term access to data, information, and knowledge.

Previously, they worked as a Research Director with the Arabic Language Technologies (ALT) Group at the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI). In this role, they led research and incubation of economically sustainable initiatives focused on developing state-of-the-art methods and technologies for processing Arabic content and spoken language.

Before joining QCRI, Natasa was a Professor Emerita of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham. Natasa held the position of Chair of Data Science and conducted research in computational methods and conceptual frameworks for applying state-of-the-art techniques in information retrieval, machine learning, and AI. Natasa also taught professional ethics in computing.

Prior to their academic career, Natasa worked at Microsoft for many years. Natasa served as a Principal Researcher, where they created and led the Integrated Systems interdisciplinary research group. Natasa developed more than 20 prototypes, received 13 patents, and published over 90 publications across computer science disciplines. Natasa also served as the Director of the Research Partnership Programme at Microsoft, connecting the company with leading innovators in industry for collaborative research initiatives.

Natasa's early career includes a role as the Director of Research at Clairvoayance, where they led a team of researchers focused on information retrieval techniques and natural language processing. Clairvoayance, formerly known as Claritech, was a pioneer in computational linguistics and incorporating NLP into statistical information retrieval models.

Throughout their career, Natasa Milic-Frayling has made significant contributions to the field of computer science, particularly in the areas of information retrieval, machine learning, AI, and computational linguistics.

Natasa Milic-Frayling completed their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Zagreb/Sveuciliste u Zagrebu from 1980 to 1984. Natasa then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University, where they studied from 1985 to 1988.
