The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is the lead agency charged with formulating the federal government’s health IT strategy and coordinating federal health IT policies, standards, programs, and investments. ONC is organizationally located within the Office of the Secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The position of National Coordinator was created in 2004, through an Executive Order, and legislatively mandated in the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) of 2009.

The IT and Cybersecurity Team at ONC is responsible for ensuring the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the organization's health IT systems. They manage and protect data infrastructure, implement cybersecurity measures, conduct risk assessments, and develop policies to safeguard sensitive health information. This team also ensures compliance with federal health IT standards, supports system analysis and optimization, and oversees program management to enhance overall health IT security and efficiency.
