POSITION: VP of Origination and Power Marketing

Heelstone Renewable Energy is a utility-scale solar developer headquartered in Durham, NC with expertise in originating, financing, constructing, and operating solar photovoltaic projects. Heelstone’s strategy includes greenfield development, co-development, and acquisitions of later stage projects. POSITION SUMMARY: 

Heelstone is seeking a VP of Origination and Power Marketing who will be responsible for developing and executing Heelstone’s power purchase agreement (PPA) and energy offtake agreement strategy for its utility-scale renewable energy pipeline. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of energy markets, exceptional negotiation skills, and a proven track record in power sales and marketing. This is a full-time hybrid position located in Durham, NC.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and execute comprehensive power marketing strategies to optimize the revenue potential of our solar, battery storage, and hybrid assets.

  • Secure financeable PPAs and other offtake agreements for Heelstone’s pipeline projects

  • Address, assess, and negotiate ways to mitigate the main risks related to the offtake agreements (i.e. basis, curtailment, negative, prices, etc.), taking into consideration transmission analysis, among others.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key utilities, corporate procurement, and contract personnel.

  • Lead contract negotiations with power purchasers to reach contract execution and delivery. Ensure favorable terms that align with company goals and financial targets.

  • Collaborate with the development, finance, and operations teams to align power marketing efforts with overall company strategy and project timelines.

  • Work closely with development, finance, and operations to ensure proposed offtake is technically and operationally feasible and financeable.

  • Lead the commercialization of any other product or byproduct generated by Heelstone’s assets (i.e. iRECs)

  • Support in sizing and design from a power markets and regulation’s perspective batteries or any other hybridized project.

  • Define the pricing strategy and execute the participation in capacity payment’s auctions, as well as any other source of revenue due to capacity or energy generated by Heelstone’s assets.

  • Conduct detailed market analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and risks in energy markets.

  • Stay abreast of regulatory changes and market developments affecting the energy sector.

  • Lead the creation of sales materials, bilateral proposals, and responses to requests for proposals (RFPs)

  • Create and deliver compelling and customized presentations to potential and existing power purchasers.

  • Provide regular reports and updates (e.g., monthly) to the team on progress, strategy, etc..

  • Identify and materialize sources of optimization through short-term trading strategies for Heelstone’s assets.

SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES

  • Highly proficient in MS Office, including, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Exceptional analytical capabilities and attention to detail
  • Self-starter that operates well in an entrepreneurial and collaborative environment
  • Strong sense of accountability, taking ownership over projects and responsibilities and resolving issues proactively.
  • Ability to work concurrently on a variety of projects, prioritize efforts, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Strong organization and management skills

EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

  • 5+ years of successfully negotiating and closing PPAs and other energy contracts.

  • Deep network of corporate/utility industry contacts and brokers across the United States

  • Experience creating and responding to RFPs for energy offtake arrangements.

  • Deep understanding of energy markets, pricing mechanisms, and regulatory frameworks.

  • Detailed knowledge of wholesale power markets and products

  • Familiarity with project economics analyses and financing (including tax and accounting concepts)

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Up to 30% travel may be required, which may fluctuate based on business needs.
