Jared Lorince, PhD has extensive work experience in various roles related to software engineering, data intelligence, and research. Currently, they are working as a Senior Software Engineer at Hex Technologies since May 2021. Prior to that, they worked at Narrative Science in different roles including Data Intelligence Technical Lead from February 2021 to May 2021, Senior Software Engineer from July 2019 to February 2021, and Software Engineer from May 2017 to July 2019.
From August 2016 to May 2017, Jared worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern Institute for Complex Systems (NICO), collaborating on multiple research projects in the areas of complex systems and computational social science. Jared'sresponsibilities included employing machine learning, text mining, and statistical methods for projects such as prediction of the emergence of new scientific fields and musical genres, analysis of gender differences in media consumption and production, and large-scale data visualization.
Prior to NICO, Jared worked at StumbleUpon where they were a Data Scientist from July 2015 to August 2016. In this role, they acted as the lead developer of a framework in Apache Spark that combined topic modeling and rating prediction for learning user interest profiles and content recommendation on the SU Web discovery platform. Jared also served as a Data Science Intern at StumbleUpon from April 2015 to July 2015, where they researched and prototyped methods for identification of canonical user interest profiles.
Before joining StumbleUpon, Jared was a Graduate Student Researcher at Indiana University Bloomington from August 2010 to August 2016. Jared'swork there focused on developing models of online music listening and tagging behavior, as well as building web scrapers for data collection and developing analytic approaches using Python, Graphlab Create, and Spark.
Furthermore, Jared gained research experience as a Research Scientist Student at Yahoo! Labs from July 2011 to March 2012, as a Research Assistant at Sonoma State University from August 2009 to February 2010, as a Research Assistant at Concepts & Cognition Lab - UC Berkeley from August 2008 to May 2009, and as a Research Assistant at Computational Cognitive Science Lab - UC Berkeley from August 2008 to May 2009. Jared also worked as a Research Assistant at Universidad Complutense de Madrid from March 2008 to July 2008.
