Carolyn Duronio

Chief Legal Officer, Secretary at Highmark Health

Carolyn Duronio serves as the chief legal officer and secretary for Highmark Health, a $21 billion national, blended health organization that includes one of America's largest Blue Cross Blue Shield insurers and a growing regional hospital and physician network. Based in Pittsburgh, Pa., Highmark Health's 37,000 employees serve millions of customers nationwide through the nonprofit organization's affiliated businesses including Highmark Inc., Allegheny Health Network, HM Insurance Group, United Concordia Dental, HM Health Solutions and Helion.

In her current role, Ms. Duronio oversees the legal affairs of the company, manages the legal department, and serves on the company's leadership team. In addition, she is secretary of the board of directors of Highmark Inc. and Highmark Health.

Prior to joining Highmark Health in 2020, Ms. Duronio practiced her entire career at the global law firm Reed Smith LLP, building a nationally acclaimed practice supporting tax-exempt organizations. Ms. Duronio has extensive experience representing healthcare organizations.

While in private practice, Ms. Duronio was included in Best Lawyers in America from 2003 through 2020 in the category of Tax Law and was recognized as the Best Lawyers™ "Lawyer of the Year" in Pittsburgh in 2015 and 2017 for Education Law and Nonprofit/Charities Law, in 2019 for Tax Law, and in 2020 for Nonprofit/Charities Law.

She was selected as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania, an honor awarded by the Governor of Pennsylvania to outstanding women throughout the Commonwealth for their leadership and contributions. Ms. Duronio has received many honors and awards from community organizations because of her service and dedication to the community, including the following: the Girls Scouts Western Pennsylvania Woman of Distinction in Law; the Caritas Award for Leadership by Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh; a Woman in Business Award by the Pittsburgh Business Times; an Allied Professional of the Year by the Pittsburgh Planned Giving Council; an Oakland Catholic Leading Lady; a YWCA's Leadership Award for Professional Services; and a Carlow University Woman of Spirit.

Ms. Duronio holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Science from Harvard University where she graduated magna cum laude, a Post Graduate Diploma in Accountancy from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow Scotland), and a Juris Doctor degree, also magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School.
