Charles Jaffe, MD, PhD has an extensive work experience in the field of biomedical informatics and medical research. Charles currently serves as a Visiting Scholar in the Division of Biomedical Informatics at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. Previously, they held the position of CEO at HL7, a global authority on electronic health information standards. Charles also worked as a Commissioner at CCHIT, an organization focused on certifying electronic health records. Prior to that, they served as the Senior Global Strategist at Intel and Director of Medical Informatics at AstraZeneca. Dr. Jaffe has also held leadership positions at the American Medical Informatics Association and San Diego Clinical Research. Charles started their career as a Scientist at NIH/NIAID and later became an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University.
Charles Jaffe, MD, PhD attended The Johns Hopkins University from 1963 to 1967, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry. Charles then pursued their medical education at Duke University School of Medicine from 1967 to 1971, earning an MD degree. During the same period, from 1969 to 1972, they also pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Pathology/Experimental Pathology (Computer Science) at Duke University.
