Kris V. Iyer

SVP & Chief Physician Development Officer, Hoag Clinic at Hoag Hospital

Dr. Iyer moved to the U.S. in 1981, and trained in Internal Medicine at East Tennessee State University and completed his Endocrinology fellowship in 1986 at University of California, Irvine. He started his practice at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Hospital soon after his fellowship and since coming to Hoag, Dr. Iyer has been involved with patient improvement activities as a member of the emergency room, cancer, medical executive, and judicial review committees. He was the Chairman of the Department of Medicine for two terms and served as Chief of Staff from 2001 to 2003.

Dr. Iyer, with the assistance of medical staff leadership, was involved in the development of the intensivists program, hospitalists program, disclosure policy, and clinical and sentinel events policy, as well as transformed the care of patients with hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients at Hoag. He chaired the credentials committee before being elected to the hospital’s Board of Directors where he served from 2005-2008. He served in the quality, finance, facilities and building and strategic planning committees of the Board of Directors. Dr. Iyer has attended many advanced training courses and is a member of many professional associations. He was on the advisory body and speakers’ bureau of drug and device manufacturers.

Dr. Iyer has been dedicated to improving diabetes care at Hoag for many years. He was appointed as the Executive Medical Director for the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center in 2012 where he improved diabetes care and increased the available services. In Fall of 2013 Hoag announced the establishment of the Dr. Kris V. Iyer Endowed Chair in Diabetes Care at the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center. Naming this chair in Dr. Iyer’s honor is a testament to his incredible success and outstanding work with the Allen Diabetes Center. This Endowed Chair was made possible by the vision and generosity of Mary and Dick Allen, the Hoag Family Foundation, and Margaret and Tom Larkin.

The Allen Diabetes Center provides comprehensive services for both adults and children with diabetes and offers clinical, educational and support services designed to meet the needs of patients with diabetes and their families. Specialty programs include medical nutrition therapy, ADA accredited diabetes self-management education, Herbert Family Program for young adults with type 1 diabetes and “Sweet Success” for pregnant women with diabetes.

In 2012, Dr. Iyer was named chief administrative officer of HMTS and was instrumental in establishing Hoag Medical Group, a multispecialty physician group which is comprised of more than 100physicians in various specialties. His leadership and expertise helped shape this group that is focused on patient-centric care in the areas of Internal Medicine, Family medicine, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Sports Medicine, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, HIV Medicine and Allergy. HMG has 18 medical group locations and serves 14 urgent care centers.

As further acknowledgement of Dr. Iyer’s commitment to the community, PADRE Foundation, an organization supporting children with type 1 diabetes and their parents, recognized him a “Visionary Leader” in 2017.

Due to his extensive work in physician engagement with HMG, Dr. Iyer assumed the role of Senior Vice President & Chief Physician Development Officer for Hoag Clinic in 2020.
