Erik Westerlund

Spine Surgeon & Director, Hughston Spine Outcomes Lab at Hughston Clinic

Erik Westerlund, MD, FACS has extensive work experience in the field of spine surgery and research. Erik is currently serving as the Spine Surgeon and Director at Hughston Clinic Orthopaedics, where they oversee the Hughston Spine Outcomes Lab. Prior to this, they worked at St. Francis Spine Center at St. Francis Hospital for over a decade, serving as the Director of the Integrated spine surgery program and the Director of Spinal Research. Before that, they held the position of CFO and Director of the Division of Spine Surgery at CORE Orthopaedic Medical Center in the Scripps Hospital System. Additionally, they have worked as a Consultant at Orthovita.

Erik Westerlund, MD, FACS has an extensive education history. Erik completed a Bachelor of Arts in Biology/Biological Sciences from the University of Virginia in 1990. Erik then pursued their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine from 1991 to 1995. During their time at Georgetown, they also obtained a Doctor of Medicine - MD in Medicine and Surgery.

Following this, Dr. Westerlund undertook a General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Virginia from 1995 to 1997. Erik continued their education at the same institution, specializing in Orthopedic Biomechanics as a Fellow from 1996 to 1997. Dr. Westerlund then completed their Residency in the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Virginia from 1997 to 2001.

Additionally, they pursued a Fellowship in Reconstructive spine surgery at Jefferson Health from 2000 to 2001. Dr. Westerlund also holds a certification from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, obtained in 2004.
