At UMass Medical School, they worked on expressing and characterizing the physiological properties of mutant cardiac ion channels using primary cardiomyocytes. In their role as a PhD candidate at the University of Georgia, they utilized the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to understand the effects of the Legionella pneumophila effector protein LegC7 on eukaryotic cells, focusing on yeast genetics, biochemistry, and fluorescent microscopy.

Kevin O'Brien obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Microbiology from The University of Georgia, where they studied from 2011 to 2016. Prior to that, they earned their Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Biology and Biochemistry from the College of the Holy Cross, studying there from 2008 to 2011. Additionally, they have obtained several certifications including Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials: Operational Level Responder from the Massachusetts Fire Training Council in February 2023, and Emergency Medical Technician from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians in May 2017.
