Brian Williams has a vast and diverse work experience spanning over several decades. Brian began their professional career in 1978 as the General Counsel, Company Secretary, and Director for Robert Holmes à Court's Bell Group Limited. During their tenure there, they specialized in takeovers, mergers, and acquisitions across various industries.
In 1983, Williams joined Shell Energy Australia as a Senior Legal Officer, where they focused on resources work and played a key role in the joint takeover of Woodside by Shell and BHP, as well as the acquisition of the 7/11 franchise.
Williams then moved to Rio Tinto in 1989, starting as the GM Legal and eventually progressing to the role of Chief Counsel. During their time at Rio Tinto, they worked on resource-related matters, cross-border joint ventures, due diligence, divestments, and intellectual property issues. Brian also held responsibilities in shipping, group procurement, and e-commerce. Additionally, Williams served as a director of Rio Tinto Shipping Pty. Ltd.
In the year 2000, Williams was seconded to Quadrem by Rio Tinto to establish an international legal and tax structure for an electronic transaction delivery platform. Brian later joined Quadrem as Chief Legal Officer, Company Secretary, Chief Privacy Officer, and Chief Risk Officer. In these roles, they oversaw all legal aspects and board meetings for the Quadrem group, conducted annual security audits, and implemented risk management practices.
Williams also had involvement in various organizations outside of their primary roles. Brian served as an Independent Member of the Finance & Risk Management Committee for Macedon Ranges and North Western Melbourne Medicare Local Limited from 2013 to 2015. Additionally, they held director positions at Charlotte International Holdings Ltd from 2011 to 2020 and STREAT Ltd from 2013 to 2019, where they helped provide training and support for homeless youth in the hospitality industry.
Most recently, Williams joined Interlate in 2016 as the General Counsel. Overall, their career has been marked by significant achievements and a diverse range of legal and leadership roles across multiple industries.
Brian Williams completed their LL. B. (Hons) degree at the University of Canterbury from 1964 to 1968. Following this, they pursued an LL. M. (Hons) degree at the same institution in 1969, specializing in Law of Contracts, International Law, and Criminal Law. In February 1970, they obtained the qualification of Barrister & Solicitor from the High Court of New Zealand. Later, in April 1980, Brian obtained the certification of Barrister, Solicitor & Proctor from the Supreme Court of Western Australia. Lastly, in April 1983, they obtained the certification of Barrister & Solicitor from the Supreme Court of Victoria.
