Youngik Yang

Staff Scientist at J. Craig Venter Institute

Youngik Yang has a diverse work experience in the field of bioinformatics. Youngik started their career as a Teaching Assistant at Western Michigan University from January 2003 to May 2005. Youngik then worked as an Intern at the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics, Indiana University from May 2009 to September 2009, where they focused on improving 454 sequence assembly and EST analysis. Later, they joined Indiana University as a Research Assistant from January 2006 to August 2010, where they developed methods for genome annotation and worked on modeling methylation susceptibility.

In 2010, Youngik Yang started their work at the J. Craig Venter Institute, where they held the roles of Post-Doctoral Fellow and Staff Scientist. As a Post-Doctoral Fellow, they developed a short peptide sequence assembler and conducted microbial community analysis using 16S rRNA and metatranscriptomics analysis. In their role as a Staff Scientist, their work centered around the development of a microbial community analysis pipeline, a metagenomics sequence assembler, and transcriptomics analysis in human oral biofilm.

Overall, Youngik Yang has demonstrated a strong background in bioinformatics and has worked on various projects related to sequence analysis, microbial communities, and genome annotation throughout their career.

Youngik Yang earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Kyung Hee University in 2000. After that, they pursued a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from Western Michigan University, completing it in 2005. Youngik then went on to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, U.S.A, where they obtained a Ph.D. in Computer Science, completing their studies in 2010.
