Matt Wheeler

Matt Wheeler has a diverse work experience in various technology companies. Matt currently holds the position of Lead ML Engineer at Jane Technologies, Inc. since February 2022. Before that, they worked at Apple as a Machine Learning Engineer from October 2018 to January 2022, where they were a founding member of the visual intelligence team, focusing on search for web images within the Siri and Spotlight product lines. Prior to Apple, Matt worked at Laserlike Inc from June 2017 to October 2018 as a Machine Learning Engineer, where they owned all aspects of the personalization service and was responsible for re-ranking retrieved articles and building personalized queries using NLP techniques. Matt also worked at Polyvore / Yahoo! as a Senior Software Engineer from September 2015 to June 2017, where they took ownership of the "You May Also Like" feature on Yahoo View and trained various models to increase relevance of suggested TV shows. Additionally, they worked at Polyvore as a Senior Software Engineer from May 2014 to September 2015, where they developed a new product ranking algorithm for Polyvore's product search page. Matt also worked at Groupon as a Software Engineer, Personalization Algorithms from November 2011 to April 2014, where they developed and maintained code and predictive models for targeted deals. Prior to that, they were a Graduate Student and Graduate Student Researcher at UCSB from September 2008 to September 2011, where they developed statistical methods on GPUs. Matt started their career at Amazon.com as a Software Development Engineer from June 2005 to September 2008, where they were involved in designing and preventing gaming of the DVD Rentals free trial offer and developed new features for the subscriptions platform. Matt also has experience working at Quantum Simulations, Inc. as a Sr. Software Engineer from June 2002 to May 2005, where they played a key role in the design and development of Quantum™ Artificial Intelligent Tutors and Assessors. Matt began their career at Interscope Technologies as a Software Engineer from November 2001 to May 2002, where they developed software for the Excellerator system. Overall, Matt has a strong background in machine learning, software engineering, and data science with experience in various industries.

Matt Wheeler earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from UCLA, where they studied from 1996 to 2000. Following this, they pursued a Master of Arts degree in Statistics and Applied Probability at UC Santa Barbara from 2008 to 2010.
