Patrick Shih is an accomplished academic and researcher currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley since 2021 and as the Director of Plant Biosystems Design at the Joint BioEnergy Institute since July 2018. Previously, Patrick held the position of Assistant Professor at the University of California, Davis from 2018 to 2021 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 2013 to 2018, focusing on synthetic biology tools for plant genetic engineering. Patrick's early career included roles as a Graduate Student Instructor at UC Berkeley, teaching Plant Physiology and Biochemistry Lab and Introduction to Protein Informatics Lab, and as a Teaching Assistant at UC San Diego, where instruction spanned multiple quarters in Bacteriology and Biochemistry. Patrick earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Biology from the University of California, Berkeley and holds dual bachelor's degrees in Microbiology and Political Science from UC San Diego.
