David Boysen currently serves as Chief of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, a position held since August 2022. With a career at the City of Kalamazoo spanning from June 1995 to the present, David has held multiple roles, including Assistant Chief of Public Safety and Captain of the Community Outreach and Problem Solving Division. This division focuses on enhancing community relationships and effectively addressing neighborhood concerns through collaboration with the Community Policing Unit, Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team, and Adult probation/parole. Prior to the chief position, David served as Deputy Chief from March 2021 to August 2023. David Boysen obtained a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice/Police Science from Western Michigan University between 1990 and 1995.

Officers may serve as Criminal Investigators, Crime Laboratory Technicians, Neighborhood Liaison Officers, K-9 Handlers, and Drug Enforcement Investigators. Officers also have the opportunity to serve in special units, in addition to their primary assignments, such as the Honor Guard, Bomb Squad, and Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT). The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is committed to a Community Public Safety service delivery model. Community involvement is a primary organizational goal.
