The company

Kenga is a mediatech brand creating media content, building digital platforms, and conducting research initiatives that spotlight Afro Gen Z culture and insights. Through our network of top young African creators and creative talent, we help global brands reach and engage Afro Gen Z audiences and consumers.

What you’ll be doing:

You’ll be part of the content team at Kenga. In this role, you’ll spend a lot of time collaborating with other editors and directors on content and partnerships in the areas of tech products, startups, and startup culture. You’ll enjoy a lot of autonomy as a creator and and editor with the freedom to come up with new editorial formats and reporting angles. You’ll also be working with our marketing team to come up with new ways to transform your digital stories into fun bite-sized content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, Snapchat Spotlight, and/or YouTube Shorts.

Who you will work with:

You’ll be reporting to our Content Director who manages all content products, platforms, and engagements at Kenga. You’ll also work collaboratively with other editors and creators at Kenga to create unique content on stories that resonate with Afro Gen Z audiences.

Responsibilities:

Your chief responsibilities would be:

  • Leading Kenga’s lifestyle content on tech products, startups, and startup culture across its portfolio of media products and platforms
  • Contributing a minimum of two (2) stories to each issue of Kenga Magazine relevant to the content areas mentioned above
  • Contributing a minimum of one (1) content piece every week to be featured on Kenga Digital and/or any of our social media platforms
  • Creating, commissioning, and/or directing graphic designs, art projects, creative campaigns, and merch designs relevant to content projects on tech & startups
  • Leading qualitative and quantitative research initiatives aimed at generating original insights into the tech and startup trends, preferences, and communities of Afro Gen Zs
  • Participating in team brainstorm, feedback, and update meetings to build connections with other members of the Kengang
  • Assisting with execution of occasional special or strategic projects and generally contribute across Kenga where opportunities arise
  • Overseeing the completion of web production tasks such as building post metadata, editing photos, and scheduling social media posts relevant to tech products, startups, and startup culture
  • Staying ahead of the news on everything tech- and startups-related that’s relevant to Kenga’s audiences and clients
  • Serving as an editorial liaison between Kenga and external startups, startup ecosystems, venture capital firms and other relevant tech/startup entities or communities
  • Representing Kenga at external tech & startup functions subject to approval from the CEO/Publisher or the Content Director
  • Working with the rest of the content team to create a safe, collaborative, creative, excellence-driven, and human culture at Kenga

We are looking for someone with:

  • Demonstrated knowledge, networks, and interests in tech products, startups, and startup culture in Africa
  • A passion for researching an telling stories about the people, ideas, and trends shaping Afro Gen Z culture
  • A Kenga personality: a delicate balance of nerdiness, quirkiness, cultural awareness, and creative brilliance
  • An eagerness to experiment with diverse content format across text, audio, video, photo, and mixed reality
  • An interest in building a career in the global mediatech space
  • Ability to work independently without need for any micromanaging to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work with international teams across multiple time zones
  • A bias to action, creating and innovating with content at the speed of Gen Z
  • A builder mindset, looking to roll up their sleeves to help across a range of special and strategic projects at Kenga that are sometimes unrelated to your specific job

These are not mandatory requirements, but it’ll be nice to also have:

  • Experience working in media or at a digital publication
  • Experience creating graphics and visual art, especially for social media
  • A robust network of top African founders, startup communities, and VCs
  • Experience conducting qualitative and/or qualitative research projects
