Ian Smith, P.E., LEED AP, CEFP, has extensive work experience in the facilities and engineering field. Ian currently serves as the Vice President for Facilities, Planning, and Sustainability at Kenyon College since February 2020. Prior to this, they held the position of Director of Facilities at Earlham College from August 2011 to February 2020 and at Emma Willard School from January 2000 to July 2011. Ian also worked as a Town Engineer for the Town of Milton, Vermont from September 1997 to December 1999. Additionally, they have gained valuable experience at Oak Ridge National Laboratory where they served as a Project Engineer in the Environmental Restoration Program from April 1994 to August 1997 and as a Postgraduate Fellow in the Environmental Sciences Division from March 1992 to March 1994. Furthermore, Ian served as a Commissioned Officer in the drilling reservist capacity at Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) from January 1992 to December 1993 and as an active duty Commissioned Officer from November 1985 to July 1990.

Ian Smith, P.E., LEED AP, CEFP obtained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Princeton University in 1985. In 1992, they completed their Master of Engineering in Engineering Management from Dartmouth College. Ian is a licensed civil engineer in the State of Vermont since July 1992. Additionally, Ian obtained certifications as a LEED Accredited Professional from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2005, and as a Certified Educational Facilities Professional from APPA - Leadership in Educational Facilities in March 2019. Ian also graduated from the Institute for Facilities Management, a program conducted by the Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA) in 2007.
