Dr. Dane P. Rook is a Research Scholar in Stanford University’s School of Engineering, where his research focuses on financial technology, institutional asset ownership, and organizational innovation. Previously, Dr. Rook was a Research Scientist at Kensho Technologies (which was purchased by S&P Global in early 2018 as part of the largest ever acquisition of an AI start-up). As an early member of Kensho, Dr. Rook helped design its NLP-powered index-construction algorithms. Prior to Kensho, Dr. Rook was an Associate with Huron River Ventures, where he focused on seed-stage investments across a variety of industries. Earlier, he was a member of J.P.Morgan’s Investment Banking Division in New York City, before making a return to research. Dr. Rook earned his Doctorate from the University of Oxford as a Clarendon Scholar. He also was awarded a MPhil from the University of Cambridge and a bachelor’s degree (as a Carson Scholar) from the University of Michigan. He has published numerous academic papers across the topics of technology, investment, and innovation, and is the co-author of a forthcoming book (through Stanford University Press), The Technological Investor: Innovation in Long-Term Investing. His work has been featured in outlets such as Harvard Business Review, Centred Investor, Pensions & Investments, and Institutional Investor, as well as in numerous peer-reviewed journals. He is also currently serving as an Advisor for a stealth-mode fin-tech startup in Silicon Valley, and helping in the design of their strategy and architecture for a set of machine learning tools for advanced liquidity analysis. Dr. Rook’s experience with developing NLP technologies for the financial-services space will be a significant benefit for Kite Edge. Furthermore, his deep understanding of the technological needs of major players in the asset-ownership universe will be an advantage in guiding product deployment – as will his extensive network of contacts at large institutional-investment organizations across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
