Nicholas Durr

Nicholas Durr has a diverse work experience in the field of biomedical engineering and health innovation. Nicholas began their career as a Research Intern at the University of Surrey in 2002, followed by a role as a Research Engineer at Nellcor from 2003 to 2004. Nicholas then joined the University of Texas at Austin as an NSF IGERT Graduate Fellow, where they focused on building imaging systems and investigating novel contrast agents for cancer cell imaging. Nicholas also developed a laser nanosurgery system for tissue manipulation.

In 2010, Nicholas became a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Frangioni Lab, Harvard Medical School, and later joined MIT as an M+Vision Postdoctoral Fellow in 2011. At MIT, they led an international project on optical colonoscopy and created a low-cost device for measuring eye prescriptions.

Nicholas's entrepreneurial journey began in 2014 when they co-founded PlenOptika, a company dedicated to improving eye care accessibility. Nicholas served as the CEO from 2013 to 2015. In 2020, Nicholas co-founded Kubanda Cryotherapy, focusing on affordable cryoablation. Nicholas is also currently an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, with primary appointments in Biomedical Engineering and secondary appointments in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Ophthalmology.

Nicholas's commitment to health innovation is further demonstrated through their role as an EIH Advisory Board Member at UW Engineering Innovation in Health. Nicholas contributes to the development of innovative solutions, training the next generation of health innovators, and creating collaborative environments for the wider health community.

Nicholas Durr began their education in 1999 at the University of California, Berkeley, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Nicholas completed their undergraduate studies in 2003. Following this, Nicholas Durr went on to The University of Texas at Austin and enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Biomedical Engineering. Nicholas successfully obtained their Ph.D. degree in 2010.
