Secretary-general - Global CEO at Läkarmissionen / LM International

Josephine Sundqvist, PhD, has a diverse background in various roles within the development and humanitarian assistance sectors. Josephine has served as the Secretary-General and CEO of LM International - Läkarmissionen, where they managed the global Secretariat and provided strategic guidance for the organization's country and regional programs. Prior to this, they held positions at Sida as a Senior Strategic Advisor and Programme Manager Specialist, overseeing capacity development programs and partnerships related to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and Environment/Climate. Josephine also acted as the Regional Representative for Eastern Africa at ACT Alliance, where they led strategic planning and implementation of programs focused on health and education. Josephine conducted extensive research on Public Private Partnerships in Health sector development during their time as a Development Researcher and Senior Policy Analyst at Uppsala University. Additionally, they have experience in leadership and organizational development as the CEO of a consultancy company and as the Global Coordinator for Development Cooperation Sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia at LSU. Josephine began their career as an Ombudsman for Democracy and Human Rights, raising awareness and coordinating implementation of youth policy.

Josephine Sundqvist, PhD has an extensive education history. Josephine obtained their Bachelor's degree in Peace and Development Studies from the University of Gothenburg in 2007. Josephine then pursued a Master's degree in Global studies - Global Political Economy at the same university from 2007 to 2009.

In 2011, Josephine enrolled in Uppsala University and completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Teologie doktor in 2016. Josephine further enhanced their skills and knowledge by attending various certificate courses.

In 2020, they completed a Hyper Island Facilitation course at Hyper Island, focusing on Facilitative leadership, team performance, and process design. Josephine also gained expertise in Public Policy Analysis by completing a Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development Course at the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) in the same year.

Continuing their commitment to professional development, Josephine joined Novare Leadership Academy in 2021 and completed an Executive Management Program, specializing in Business Administration and Management. Josephine also enrolled in the UN Executive Leadership Programme for Sustainable Development at the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) to enhance their skills in Organizational Leadership - Executive Education.

Looking ahead, Josephine plans to undertake a Global Leadership Development program at The Woman in Water Diplomacy Global Network from 2022 to 2023. In the same period, they will also pursue a PI Talent Optimization Certification at EuroAcademy International, focusing on Human Resources Development and Leadership.

The organisation was founded in 1958 and currently employs almost 300 employees around the world. Our primary target groups are marginalised groups in society and vulnerable women and children. Our work is focused on Africa, Latin America, the MENA region and Europe, and directed from our head office in Stockholm. Our aid operations are financed by funds raised from the public in Sweden and by institutional grants.
