Bioinformatician I/ II

Full-time · England, United Kingdom

Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented and highly motivated Bioinformatician to join an exciting new business venture focused on applying the company’s proprietary gene silencing platform (GEiGS) to the development of novel human therapeutics.

The GEiGS technology facilitates Stable, Tunable and Programmable silencing activity that differentiates it from alternative gene editing or gene regulation approaches, and specifically enables production of programmable, next-generation advanced therapies, addressing many current limitations.

The appointee will be joining a multidisciplinary team of computational and experimental biologists. The post is ideal for a dynamic individual looking to be part of a cutting-edge research program that will also have real impact on patients’ lives. Due to the early stage nature of the company it is imperative to have a pragmatic, can-do, collaborative approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement bioinformatic strategies that deliver uniform processing of high-throughput transcriptomics data.
  • Maintain and advance existing bioinformatics pipelines with a focus on tailoring them to human genome applications.
  • Design and execute statistically robust genome-scale analyses that will inform subsequent strategies of the R&D team.
  • Apply statistical and computational methods to extract insight from complex data, including structure identification, quantification, and differential expression analyses.
  • Develop machine learning techniques to uncover hidden patterns in complex biological systems.
  • Collaborate in the integration of machine learning tools and pipelines into scientific research and experimental workflows to streamline results.
  • Communicate results and findings to both technical and non-technical teams within the company, and internationally through presentations, reports, and collaborative discussions.
  • Additional duties consistent with the nature and grade of the post may be required.

Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • MSc/PhD with experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, and/or a related field.
  • Experience with mammalian genomics and genome-scale data analysis, e.g., variant calling, expression profiling (bulk/single-cell RNA-seq) and/or other functional genomics applications.
  • Familiarity with cloud services (AWS) and databases (SQL) for genomics data processing and storage.
  • Demonstrable experience programming in Python & R
  • Strong communication skills, able to relay information both to computational and experimental scientists.
  • Team-focused toward collaboration and collective success.
  • Ability to appropriately document tasks to ensure reproducible results and processes; experience with code repositories.

 Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Prior experience in functional human genomics or miRNA transcriptomics fields.
  • Strong understanding of statistical analysis, feature engineering, and model interpretation in the context of biological data.
  • Training and experience in the application of machine learning and use of statistical models.
  • Experience with AWS, Docker, Git, Jira, Nextflow software.
