John Paul Ashenfelter has over a decade of experience in software engineering and development. John Paul began their career in 2008 as the organizer of the Shenandoah Ruby Users Group (ShRUG). In 2014, they joined Big Cartel as a Developer. In 2015, they were Head of Engineering at Wheelhouse.io, where they led the development of an integrated CLI/web-based learning platform for GitHub and git training in partnership with GitHub's training organization. In 2016, they became a Senior Software Architect at EdSurge. In 2017, they were appointed Director of Platform at Epion Health, Inc. In 2018, they became the CTO at CJP-IKON, where they ran a small team building a product from scratch. In 2019, they were a Senior Engineer and Technical Lead for the Backend Tools at VA.gov, where they increased the capacity of the platform by 300%. In 2020, they joined FireHydrant as a Staff Software Engineer and Technical Lead for the Service Catalog product. Finally, in 2022, they were appointed Director of Engineering at Locus.

John Paul Ashenfelter obtained a BS in Chemistry from James Madison University between 1988 and 1992. John Paul then earned an MS in Chemistry from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign between 1993 and 1995. John Paul went on to pursue a PhD/ABD in Science Education from the University of Virginia between 1997 and 2008. John Paul also holds a certification in MySQL from MySQL.
