Dr. Larry Forney is a University Distinguished Professor and Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Idaho. He is a fellow of the American Academy for Microbiology. He is an author on over 250 peer-reviewed publications with over 27,000 citations and holds several patents pertaining to microbial communities. His educational background is in Microbiology and Public Health from Michigan State University, and his current research focuses on the biodiversity and biogeography of microbial communities in the human microbiome. He has worked on many interdisciplinary teams, including the NIH-funded Human Microbiome Project Consortium, to develop a framework for human microbiome research and to elucidate how surrounding environments influence bacterial species. In particular, Dr. Forney has extensively studied and published on the functional genetics and dynamics of the microbiome in the vaginal space, and factors that affect this space in a healthy and diseased state. He is actively involved in research on the vaginal microbiota and vaginal biomarkers in varied populations.
