Irl Duling has a diverse work experience in the field of physics and business development. Irl worked as a Director of Terahertz Business Development at Luna Innovations Incorporated / TeraMetrix from September 2006 onwards. Prior to that, they held multiple roles at C-COR, including Business Development Transport from June 2005 to May 2006 and Chief Technologist from September 2004 to May 2006. Before C-COR, they served as the Chief Scientist at Optinel Systems from 2000 to 2004. Irl began their career as a Research Physicist at Naval Research Laboratory in 1987 and worked there until 2000. Additionally, they worked as a Postdoctoral at IBM TJ Watson Research Center from 1985 to 1988.

Irl Duling obtained a Ph.D. in Optics from the University of Rochester, which they completed between 1979 and 1985. Before that, they earned an S.B. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying there from 1976 to 1978. Prior to attending MIT, they attended the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1974 to 1976, where they pursued Engineering but did not earn a degree. Irl also obtained certifications, including a Certificate of Completion in AMA's Finance Workshop for Nonfinancial Executives from the American Management Association in 2009, and a Certificate of Completion in Fundamentals of Marketing, though the details of the second certification are not provided.
