Scott Peter Smith has a diverse work experience spanning various roles in the media industry. Scott Peter started their career in 2002 as the Managing Editor at Red24, where they managed a small editorial team and developed new content products. In 2007, they worked as a Consulting Project Manager at Blend Magazine. From 2008 to 2010, they worked as a Journalist/Photojournalist at Scott Peter Smith and EAPPI UK & Ireland, reporting on various socio-political issues.

In 2010, they took on the role of Head of Digital at TNA Media, where they created and developed the digital offerings of The New Age newspaper. Scott Peter also managed the editorial team and drove revenue streams. In 2013, they joined eNCA as a Journalist/Duty Editor.

From 2015 to 2015, they worked as a Consulting Project Manager at Makamba Online, where they played a hands-on role in building the digital offerings of the media startup. In 2017, they became the Head of News Video and Podcasts at Arena Holdings, responsible for all news video and podcast production across various publications.

In 2017, they also founded Submedia | XR, a cross-platform publisher of mostly non-fiction projects. Currently, they hold the position of Chief Digital Officer (CDO) at Mail & Guardian, where they oversee digital operations.

Scott Peter Smith completed a Journalism Postgraduate Diploma in 2001 at Rhodes University. Prior to that, from 1995 to 1999, they obtained a BA degree at the University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika, majoring in English, Psychology, and Philosophy.
