Angela Mincy

Superintendent & Chief School Administrator at MARION P. THOMAS CHARTER SCHOOL

A lifelong resident of Newark, Angela N. Mincy is proud to take the helm of a school system started by members of the Newark community.

A dedicated and accomplished school leader with nearly 25 years of experience as a teacher, school counselor, program coordinator, and administrator, Ms. Mincy has served diverse student populations on all levels including special education, alternative education, English Language Learners, and gifted and talented students. She is a visionary leader and has a proven track record of building safe and cohesive school cultures, strategic partnerships, and relationships with students, staff, parents, and the greater community.

Prior to becoming the Superintendent of Marion P. Thomas Charter Schools, Ms. Mincy served as the principal of Science Park High School (SPHS), which is the highest-ranked and most selected magnet school of choice in the city of Newark. In her two years as principal, Science Park increased its state ranking from number 34 to 20 and was only one of 39 schools in the state to rank among the top 10% of the country, according to the 2021 US World and News Report. Additional achievements include a newly formed parent organization, numerous facility improvements, and a cumulative two-year $90,000 grant for Social-Emotional Learning.

Previously, Ms. Mincy successfully merged, led, and stabilized Barringer High School, the second largest comprehensive high school in the city. While at Barringer, she initiated an honors academy, a food pantry, and parent ESL classes. She also expanded curricular and extracurricular opportunities for students ranging from Advanced Placement courses and Robotics to the Visual and Performing Arts. Under her leadership, she initiated an attendance policy which led to a 20% reduction in chronic absenteeism. In her final year, Barringer received over $100,000 in grants for STEM-based programming and the arts.

Ms. Mincy earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Psychology from Rutgers University (Douglass College). She holds a Master’s degree in School Counseling and certification in Educational Leadership from Kean University.
