Joe Roy-Mayhew has a diverse work experience that spans various industries and roles. Joe started their career as an Information Technology Intern at Fairchild Semiconductor in 2003. Joe then worked as an MIT Dana Mead Intern at the Climate Institute in 2006, where their research focused on climate change feedback loops. In 2007, they served as a Difficult Hydrocarbons Intern at Shell Oil Company.

In 2008, Joe joined the Prather Lab at MIT as an Undergraduate Researcher, specializing in Metabolic Engineering. Joe'swork involved optimizing the production of glucaric acid and ethanol in metabolically engineered e. coli strains. Joe also gained teaching experience as a Graduate Student - Teaching Assistant at Princeton University, where they worked on the Global Environmental Issues course.

Moving to Vorbeck Materials in 2013, Joe took on the role of Manager in Energy. Joe analyzed and incubated new business areas, focusing on the energy storage sector. Joe played a key role in transitioning Vorbeck's Li-S battery technology from laboratory scale to pilot-scale production.

Joe joined Deloitte in 2016 as a DC Senior Consultant, specializing in Advanced Materials and Manufacturing. Joe facilitated team alignment and worked with clients on growth strategy development through innovation and product development.

Also in 2016, Joe joined Harvard University as a Business Development Associate in the Office of Technology Development. Joe acted as a liaison between faculty and intellectual property lawyers, managed licensing deals, and identified potential licensees for marketable technologies.

Joe's most recent role is at Markforged, where they have held various positions since 2016. Joe started as a Material Development Consultant, then became the Director of Materials in 2017. In 2020, they were promoted to Senior Director of Materials Engineering, overseeing materials R&D and scale-up activities. Currently, they serve as the VP of R&D and Materials, leading and innovating in hardware, software, and materials to reinvent manufacturing and deliver functional parts to customers.

Joe Roy-Mayhew graduated from Deering High School in 2004. Joe then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2008, where they earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemical-Biological Engineering. From 2008 to 2013, Joe pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemical Engineering at Princeton University. In 2008, they also obtained a certification in the Intensive Program on Sustainability (IPoS) from the University of Tokyo and Asian Institute of Technology. In 2012, Joe obtained a certification in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
