Joel Timmins

New technologies—drones, robotics, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and nanotechnology—are advancing rapidly and together are sparking a radical transformation in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Joel Timmins, Senior Director at Markon Solutions, applies his passion for continuous improvement, more than 25 years of leading cross-functional teams, and Agile Scrum to integrate these new technologies into the built environment. He is an advocate for Agile AEC™, a way of redefining the practical use of project/program information systems; capturing, quantifying, and utilizing high resolution visual data; job site progress monitoring, data collection, and progress analysis; Building Information Modeling (BIM); and how to apply Agile concepts to keep pace with the speed of technology.

Joel has trained Penn State University’s Stuckeman Center for Design Computing researchers in AgileAEC™. Researchers in the additive manufacturing lab used Agile practices in NASA’s Mars Habitat Challenge to iterate design and 3D printing of a dome structure capable of creating a human shelter on Mars. The team is now applying breakthroughs in 3D-printing technology to create sustainable housing here on earth that could revolutionize the construction industry.

Joel has presented the Agile AEC™ concept at numerous conferences including the Construction Management Association of America National Conference, Construction Managers In-Training Rising CM Conference, National Facilities and Maintenance Technologies Orlando Conference, AEC Next, SAME JETC, and CMAAFocus2019.

Joel received his BS in Organizational Leadership from Pennsylvania State University. Additionally, he is a PMI Certified Project Management Professional (PMP)®, a Certified Construction Manager (CCM), Certified Scrum Professional (CSP), Certified Scrum Master (CSM), Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), and Certified Agile Leader 1 (CAL). Joel joined Markon in 2013.
