In this role, they were responsible for investment banking coverage, client relationship management, and originating and executing debt and equity capital raising and mergers and acquisitions.

In October 2008, Nickolas joined Caterpillar Inc. as the Head of Global M&A and Caterpillar Ventures Investing. In this role, they were responsible for leading the company's corporate mergers & acquisitions and venture capital investing activities. James oversaw a team of M&A professionals located in Peoria, Chicago, Beijing, and San Francisco. Nickolas left Caterpillar in June 2017 to join Martin Marietta Materials as their Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

James A. J. Nickolas graduated with a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. James then went on to complete their MBA in Finance from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Finally, they earned their JD from University of Chicago Law School.
