Jim O'Sullivan has over 25 years of experience in the engineering field. Jim began their career in 1992 as a Member of Technical Staff at Sun Microsystems, where they led the SparcStation 10 cost reduction effort and designed a graphics accelerator board with live-video window capability. This work was awarded US (5,896,140) and European (752695) patents. In 1993, they joined Divicom as an Electrical Engineer and designed the MPEG 2 video compression and packetization board and associated FPGAs, as well as the Digital Video Input Module. Jim then moved to Cisco Systems in 1995 as a Design Engineer and designed the first fully-integrated gigabit Ethernet NIC ASIC, the Cisco gigabit Ethernet Media Access Controller, and the Embedded Logic Analyzer Module (ELAM). From 2001 to 2013, Jim worked as an Independent Consultant, providing consulting services in the areas of embedded computing and FPGA design. In 2014, they founded Laser Locator, LLC, where they developed a system to detect and locate handheld lasers from either static or mobile platforms. Since 2015, Jim has been working at Matternet Inc, first as Head of Regulatory Strategy, then as Head of Flight Systems and Electronics, and currently as VP of Regulatory Strategy and Special Projects. In this role, they are responsible for Matternet's global regulatory strategy, as well as leading Matternet's FAA Type Certification program and being responsible for operational approvals in Europe, the Middle East, and Japan.
Jim O'Sullivan is currently studying Electrical Engineering at Florida Atlantic University. Jim has also obtained several certifications, including a Remote Pilot from the Federal Aviation Administration in November 2016, an F.A.A. Commercial Pilot from the Federal Aviation Administration in October 2001, a Rescue Diver from PADI in May 1995, and a Master Parachutist from the U.S. Parachute Association (USPA) in June 1994.
