Maria Gomes Fernandes, PhD has extensive work experience in the field of cell and tissue sciences. Maria currently holds the position of Head of Cell&Tissue Sciences at Meatable since September 2023. Prior to this role, they were a Team Lead for Cell Line Development at Meatable from January 2021 to September 2023. Maria also worked as a Senior iPSC scientist at Meatable from May 2020 to January 2021 and as an iPSC and tissue engineering scientist from May 2019 to May 2020.

Before joining Meatable, Maria worked as a Researcher at the Leiden University Medical Center - Central Laboratory Animal Facility from July 2017 to May 2019. Maria also served as a PhD Candidate at the Leiden University Medical Center - Dept of Anatomy and Embryology from February 2012 to June 2016.

Maria's earlier experiences include an internship at the Leiden University Medical Center from September 2010 to August 2011, an internship at the Genetics Laboratory of the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (Medical University) from July 2009 to September 2009, and an internship at the Laboratório de Genômica Comparativa Funcional e Tecnológica, CGB-UTAD from February 2009 to May 2009.

Maria Gomes Fernandes, PhD, has a strong educational background in the field of biology. Maria obtained their Ph.D. in Stem Cell and Molecular Cardiovascular Developmental Biology from Leiden University, where they studied from 2012 to 2018. Prior to that, they earned their Master's degree in Evolutionary and Developmental Biology from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, where they attended from 2009 to 2011. Maria completed their Bachelor's degree in Genetics and Biotechnology at Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro from 2005 to 2009. Additionally, they hold a certification in "The 6 critical practices for Leading a Team" from FranklinCovey Benelux, obtained in 2021.
