Kevin Stone has a diverse work experience, starting with their role as the Director of Law Enforcement at the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board in 2019. Prior to that, they spent many years with the United States Marshals Service, where they held various positions such as Chief Deputy United States Marshal (Retired) from 2011 to 2019, Chief Deputy United States Marshal from 2008 to 2011, Supervisory Deputy United States Marshal from 2007 to 2008, and Deputy United States Marshal from 1991 to 2007. Before joining the Marshals Service, they worked as a Detective and Polygraph Examiner at the Robeson County Sheriff's Office from 1981 to 1991.

Kevin Stone obtained their Bachelor's degree in Sociology/ Criminal Justice from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where they studied from 1981 to 1984. In addition to their degree, Kevin also holds several certifications. In January 2021, they obtained a certification in "Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging" from LinkedIn. Kevin also earned a certification titled "The Six Morning Habits of High Performers" from LinkedIn in February 2021. Furthermore, in 1988, Kevin obtained a certification as a Basic Law Enforcement Instructor for the State of North Carolina from the State of North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards.
